The Sinhagad fort in earlier times was known as 'Kondhana'. In the year 1647 when Tanaji Malusare, a general in Shivaji's army, died while recapturing the fort, Shivaji remarked, "We gained the fort, but lost the lion". In honor of Tanaji, the fort was named Sinhagad (Lion's Fort). This historic monument lies at a distance of 25 km from the Poona city of India. |
A famous tourist attraction, the Sinhagad fort lies at the vicinity of the city attracting a large number of visitors from Pune and other nearby locations. Sinhagad fort is one of the best excursions from Poona City and a popular picnic spot for the locals and tourist come here in large numbers. Sinhagad fort is situated on a hill, at a height 700 m and due to its height, the fort also serves as a popular trekking destination. This Lion Fort near Pune has been ravaged over the years by the travails of time and now remains mostly in ruins. One can find the 'samadhis' of great warrior and general in Shivaji's troops Tanaji Malusare and Rajaram, the younger son of Shivaji. Also one can find other famous buildings within the premises that include the bungalows of Lokmanya Tilak, India's great freedom fighter and G.D. Madgulkarm, a famous Marathi Poet. The fort is now used by NDA (National Defense Academy) for training purposes. Apart from Sinhagad, other attractions located nearby are Panshet, Khadakwasla and Varasgaon dams and Torana fort. For the food lovers, the Buttermilk, Sweet curd, Kanda bhaji and Pithle-Bhakari of Sinhagad are hot favorites. |
