The Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum in Pune is located at Shukruwar Peth, which offers varied and unique collection of objects of the late Dinkar Kelkar who was an art lover. In this museum one can find about 21,000 priceless artifacts collections which mirror the everyday life of India. Established in the year 1962, the Pune Kelkar Museum is the one-man collection of Padmashree Dr. D.G. Kelkar (1896-1990) who was affectionately known as 'Kaka'. Kelkar dedicated his collection to the memory of his only son `Raja’ who died an unfortunate tragic death. |
| From remote areas and towns of India Kelkar collected around 20,000 unique objects from villages, tribal settlements, grand temples, humble huts, forgotten attics and folk fares. He then arranged all his collectables piece by piece, section by section, in his own room to give a historical ambience and when these collections were initially exhibited it became the talk of the town and a great attraction even to foreigners. This was the beginning of the Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum for which Kelkar devoted his entire life to build it from scratch to crest. One can see the articles belonging to Mughal and Maratha periods that dates back to 17th century are displayed at Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum. Musical instruments, metalwork, exquisite chitrakathi paintings and a unique lock collection are the other attractions of the museum.
