Pataleshwar Cave Temple dedicated to the Hindu God Shiva is located on the downtown Jungli Maharaj Road. The historical temple dating back to the 8th century AD is beautifully made by cutting the basalt rock and has a striking resembles to the gorgeous rock-cut temples of Ellora. The most interesting attribute associated with the cave temple is its gigantic pillars and its entire structure which as been casted out of a single block of stone. |
| The main attraction at the Pataleshwar Cave Temple is its sanctum which is a cube shaped room measuring 3-4 meters on each side which houses a Lingam that symbolizes Lord Shiva along with two smaller rooms on each side. One of the most astonishing structures is the circular Nandi mandapa located in front of the cave. The beautifully crafted mandapa consists of an umbrella shaped canopy that is supported by massive square pillars. A museum featuring a single grain of rice with 5000 characters engraved on it is also attached the temple. The main area of worship at the Pataleshwar Cave Temple comprises of beautifully carved stone while the rest of the temple features simple artistic stone craft. The temple houses sculptures of various gods and goddesses that include Sita, Rama, Laxman, Lakshmi, Ganesh and an over-sized Shiva lingam under its roof. The temple is open for devotees and tourists from 08.30 am to 5.30 pm every day and is easily accessible from almost all areas of Pune city. |
