| The city of Pune has got a rich cultural history that dates back to the times when it was ruled by the Rashtrakootas during 758 A.D and 768 A.D. This fact was unveiled when copper plates dating back to those periods were unearthed. At those times Pune was known as Punaka Vishaya and Punya Vishaya. Later on more copper plates dating back to 960 A.D and 963 A.D were unearthed in which the city was referred as Punaka Wadi and Punaka Desha. The city of Pune has got the distinction of being ruled by various dynasties from Yadava Empire belonging to Deogiri from the 9th century till 1327 to Nizamshahi Sultans to Mughal Empire in the 17th century to the Bhosles. The major transformation that took place in Pune was in 1625 when Rango Bapuji Dhadphale was made the administrator by Shahaji Bhonsle. Under his administration the city saw major developmental changes like the construction of Kasba, Somwar, Ravivar and Shaniwar Peths. The construction of the famous Lal Mahal Palace also started to accommodate Shivaji and his mother Jijabai. The city came under the rule of Shivaji in 1647 but was later captured by Shahista Khan and Mirza Raja Jai Singh. After Shivaji's death in 1680, the city was ruled by Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb who named the city Muhiyabad. After Aurangzeb's death the city was wrested form the Mughal by Dhanaji Jadhav a general of Queen Tarabai. The Maratha power was ended in 1818 by British led by Mount Stuart Elphinstone and British Raj was established in the region. During the British rule the city saw some notable developments and later on after partition and end of British rule the city transformed into one of the leading centers in the field of education, culture and overall development in Maharashtra and India. |
